Homemade DIY Spooky Outdoor Halloween Decorations

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays, but I’ve never been a fan of the trend of disposable decorations. Every year, tons of fast fashion and plastic décor flood the stores, but where’s the fun? Well, the fun of holidays and festivities lies in giving a unique, personal touch to homes with DIY spooky outdoor Halloween decorations. DIY Halloween decorations are sustainable and can be reused year after year.

5 DIY Outdoor Halloween Decorations

1. Creepy Ghosts

Ghosts are a Halloween classic and incredibly easy to make.

Take some white fabric/old bedsheets/ white trash bags.

Create a head for your ghost using a balloon or a Styrofoam ball.

Now drape the fabric over the head, allowing it to hang loosely. You can add a spooky and realistic effect by adding glow sticks inside the ghost’s head to make it glow at night.

Or, for a floating effect, hang the ghost from a tree branch using clear fishing.

2. DIY Tombstones

Tombstones are essential for any haunted yard.

Take foam boards or cardboard cut out the shapes of the tombstones, and paint them gray or black. Use a sponge to dab and paint, and it will give them an aged look.

For the epitaphs, get creative with names. Use a stencil or freehand the letters with black paint or a permanent marker. To increase the spookiness, carve shallow grooves into the foam.

Stake your tombstones into the ground and scatter some fallen leaves around them for that abandoned graveyard feel. Consider adding a few of them to your outdoor Halloween decoration.

3. Spider Eggs and Webs

To make spider eggs, fill white balloons with water and tie them off.

Now, take the thinnest white yarn and wrap it around the balloons. You can hang the DIY spider eggs from tree branches or the eaves of your house.

For the webs, you can use stretchable spider web material available at most stores. Or create your own using cotton batting or string. Drape the webs over bushes, fences, and even your front porch. Add some plastic spiders, or let the real ones stay around for an extra creepy touch.

4. Pumpkin Totem Pole

Start by carving faces into several pumpkins, either scary, funny, surprised, or a mix of them all. Once done, stack them on top of each other. To keep the pumpkins stable, insert a wooden dowel or metal rod through the center.

Now place the pole in a large planter or stake it into the ground.

Add LED string lights or candles inside each pumpkin for that impressive tower glow.

To add a touch of spookiness, you can add a small audio device making weird sounds all night.

5. Bloody Handprints

Mix up a batch of fake blood using corn syrup, red food coloring, and a drop of blue food coloring to deepen the shade.

Now dip your hands into the mixture and press them against your windows.

For a more temporary decoration, you can use red washable paint instead. The effect is chilling, especially when illuminated from behind by a dim, flickering light.
